Autumn 1 - Were the Romans really rotten?

Welcome back to Year 5 and Autumn 1!

This half term our learning challenge question will be 'Were the Romans really rotten?'

We will be learning all about the Roman Empire, this will also inspire our writing for this half term! In History, we will be looking at the impact of the Roman Empire and in Geography we will be using maps and atlases to locate countries and describe their features. In maths, we will be learning about place value, addition and subtraction, and statistics.

Southwell Minster choir will be coming in this half term and the children will get to learn songs and see what it is like to be a part of a real choir!

RE week will focus on Judaism and Hanukkah.

Your homework for this half term is to design (and make if you would like) your own emblem that represents you and your family. This will be due in w.c. 14.10.19.

You will also have weekly spellings to complete and will be expected to read 4x per week.

This half term we will be learning all about place value (numbers to one million), rounding and recapping our knowledge of Roman Numerals. We will also look at addition and subtraction (using column method, among others), and statistics.

Our first two weeks back will be based on an amazing book called Cosmic! We will be learning to use a variety of punctuation and recapping our knowledge of word classes. We will also begin to look at parenthesis and link this to our work on the Romans. We will be writing diary entries, narratives and poetry.

We will be learning all about materials and their properties, and will be conducting some exciting experiments!
