Activity 1

 

Revisit sounds spelt ‘-le’ at the end of words, for example:
bottle, muddle, little.


Tell your child that another spelling of this phoneme is ‘-el’.

Give your child a set of word cards and a chart headed ‘-le’ and ‘-el’. For example:

 

'-le' '-el'

 

 

 

 

 


Ask them to read each word card and then put it into either the ‘-le’ or ‘-el’ column on the chart.

The ending '-le' is the most common one to use after these letters:

 

b     c     d     f     g     k     p     st     t     z

 

This gives you these letter patterns:

 

ble    cle    dle    fle    gle    kle    ple    stle    tle    zle

 

The '-le' ending is never used after these letters:

 

m     n     r     v     w
