Spelling

This week we will focus on adding suffixes to root words.

Monday

Watch the video below to remind yourself of the rules for adding suffixes _er, _ed, _ing, _est and _y.

Now, check these spellings. Which are correct? Which have broken rules? Can you edit them?

1. walkked

2. swimming

3. hoping

4. rideer

5. teacher

6. smellyest

7. tidyer

8. jumped

9. shiney

10. runned

Tuesday

Use the words from yesterday and turn them into sentences. Can you write two sentences. One for the root word and one for the root word+suffix. This will help you see how the suffix changes the meaning of the word.

For example.

1.

Embarrassed, Josh rushed to tidy his room so his friend wouldn't see how dirty it was.

Embarrassed, Josh rushed to make his room tidier so his friend wouldn't see how dirty it was.

Wednesday

The focus suffixes are _ment and _ly.

Can you add either _ment or _ly to each root word.

root word _ment _ly
kind
quick
replace
place
shy
state
develop
clever
argue
employ
nice

Thursday

Like Tuesday, can you use write two sentences. One with the root word, one with the root word+suffix to show how the meaning changes.
