Year 1

Year 1 Wellbeing Champions

Welcome to the year 1 Hedgehog's class page!

We have lots of exciting things happening this year so keep your eyes peeled here for any updates on our year so far.

Things you can be doing at home throughout the year- reading 4x a week as minimum and writing it in your diary. We have a whole school reading race and ther more we read as a class collectively, the more chance we have of winning a prize! Reading is essential for your learning and will really help you in your life not just in school.

Please make sure you are using the  phonics home work packs that are given to you throughout the year in order to continue learning new sounds and boost both your reading and writing skills. Your Read Write Inc (RWI) books are also there to help you with specific sounds you are learning in your RWI groups.

Spring 1

This half term our PE session is every Wednesday. Please make sure your child has their PE kit for that day.

Our learning challenge question is 'Where does our food come from?' This half term our learning challenge will be focussed around our whole school value 'respect'. This is to have respect for food, how it is grown and the people who help produce it so that we can eat it. We are very fortunate to be able to eat food that is grown all over the world. We will be learning about how different foods are grown in different countries and how climate and the equator plays a role in this. We will be looking at how to prepare fruit to make our own fruit salads and will be able to taste and evaluate our dish.

Science- everyday materials. We will be exploring a range of everyday materials and their uses. We will be comparing and contrasting these materials based on their properties. We will know which materials are natural and which are man made.

Spring 2

Hello and welcome to Spring 2! Our question this half term is ‘How does the lighthouse keeper get his lunch?’ We are reading the lighthouse keepers lunch and stepping back to the Victorian times to learn about Grace Darling and her mighty rescue. Science we are continuing to look at everyday materials and investigate their properties.

Our ongoing learning about the seasons led us to Spring planting and painting!

We had a fabulous world book day! We painted lighthouses linked to our class book The lighthouse keeper’s lunch and decorated our own pebble to go in the sensory garden.

Maths- measurement

Science - testing materials to see if they are waterproof or not

Summer 1

Is it OK to steal from the rich if you give it to the poor?

This is exactly what Robin Hood did with his merry men and we are going to be learning all about it! Have you heard of Robin Hood? Do you know where he lived? Was he a real person? Well stay tuned this half term to find out more.

How do plants grow? Can you name the parts of a plant? Can you name a variety of UK trees and plants? What is the difference between a deciduous and an evergreen tree?

Find out the answers to all of these questions and many more this half term as we learn all about plants! Get ready for lots of nature walks and identifying and classifying trees and plants.

Singing Jane sessions will continue each Tuesday afternoon.

Our PE slot is to be confirmed so please bring your kit in and keep it in school for the week.
